Nio's William Li Warns of China Auto Sales Drop While Backing Own Growth (2026)

Nio's CEO, William Li, has issued a stark warning about the Chinese auto market's future, predicting a 15-20% decline in domestic retail sales this year. This forecast comes as a surprise to many, given the company's own impressive growth trajectory. Despite the industry's challenges, Li remains confident in Nio's ability to achieve a 40-50% annual sales growth, a target that aligns with the company's recent milestones and strong financial performance.

Li's pessimistic outlook on the broader market is well-founded. The first five months of 2026 saw a 19.5% year-on-year decline in domestic auto retail sales, and the trend has only worsened in June. This decline is a stark contrast to the company's own success, which has been a bright spot in an otherwise gloomy industry.

Nio's financial health is a testament to its resilience. The company posted an operating profit of 1.25 billion yuan in the fourth quarter of 2025 and maintained profitability in the first quarter of 2026, recording an operating profit of 68 million yuan. This financial stability is a key factor in Li's confidence in the company's growth prospects.

One of the key drivers of Nio's success is its multi-brand strategy. The company's main brand, along with its mass-market sub-brand Onvo and premium compact car brand Firefly, are all performing well. Firefly, in particular, has exceeded sales expectations, with demand consistently outpacing supply. The ES8 model has been the sales champion in the large SUV segment for six consecutive months, and the Onvo brand's L90 and L60 models are also gaining strong market traction.

The shift towards pure electric vehicles is another trend that Li believes is irreversible. The penetration rate of NEVs in China reached 62.9% in May, with pure electric models accounting for 42.2% of the overall powertrain market. This trend is supported by the rapid popularization of charging and battery swap infrastructure, which is improving the experiential benefits of pure electric models.

Despite the industry's challenges, Li's confidence in Nio's growth prospects is well-placed. The company's strong financial performance, multi-brand strategy, and focus on core technologies position it well to navigate the current market conditions. As the industry continues to evolve, Nio's ability to adapt and innovate will be crucial to its long-term success.
